quip: Launching your own practice right out of dental school is something many providers only dream of. What gave you the confidence to do it so early, and what’s one lesson you wish every new dentist could learn from your journey?
Dr. Miller: I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset, and I knew I wanted the freedom of running my own practice early on. When the chance came to buy one, I trusted my training at LSU and leaned on the support of family, friends, and mentors. The biggest lesson I’d share is to trust yourself and take the leap. You know more than you think!
quip: You’ve said collaboration with local dentists has been key to your success. Can you share a moment where advice from a colleague completely changed how you approached a case or decision?
Dr. Miller: The dentist who I bought the practice from told me “do good for your patients, and good will follow you.” And it couldn’t be more true! As long as you do your best for people, the success of your practice and work will follow.
quip: Oral cancer screenings, blood pressure checks, sleep apnea assessments — these can feel like “extra” to patients. How do you frame these conversations so patients see them as essential, not optional?
Dr. Miller: Dentistry isn’t just about teeth, it affects the entire body. I explain to patients that oral cancer, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea are often silent until they’re serious, and screenings give us a chance to catch things early. Patients appreciate when something fast, simple, and free can potentially save their life.
quip: With so much new research and tech hitting dentistry, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. How do you decide what’s worth bringing into your practice, and how do you stay ahead without burning out?
Dr. Miller: I focus on tools and research that truly improve patient outcomes or make care more comfortable. It’s easy to chase every new trend, but I ask whether it aligns with my philosophy of providing high-quality, patient-centered dentistry. I lean on trusted colleagues, continuing education, and vendors I trust, so I can innovate with intention, not overwhelm.
quip: Patients don’t always connect oral health to whole-body health. What’s your go-to way of explaining that link so it clicks and motivates them to act?
Dr. Miller: I try to keep things simple: your mouth is the gateway to your body. The same blood vessels and airway that support your teeth and gums also affect your heart, brain, and overall health. When patients see their oral health as part of the bigger picture, they understand that taking care of their smile is really taking care of their whole body.
quip: What’s one quip product you personally love using, and how do you think tools like that can make it easier for patients to stay consistent with their at-home care?
Dr. Miller: I love recommending the Water Flosser to my patients with bridges. It helps them clean debris out from under hard-to-reach areas!
