Chantal on inclusive care, autism-informed dentistry, and why providers should stop treating just the teeth

quip: As dental professionals, we serve patients from all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences. What does creating an inclusive dental experience look like in practice?
Chantal: Creating an inclusive dental experience means recognizing that every patient is different and deserves care that meets their specific needs. That includes using clear language, being patient, nonjudgmental, and creating a space where people feel safe, respected, and heard.
For me, inclusivity also means meeting patients where they are, and sometimes that’s not in the dental chair. Sometimes it’s in a school, a community center, a health fair, or online. When we connect with people in the spaces where they feel most comfortable, we make oral health education more accessible and more meaningful.
quip: Health literacy continues to be a challenge in dentistry. How can providers better tailor their education to meet patients where they are?
Chantal: It all starts with listening. Before we educate, we need to understand what a patient already knows, what they’re worried about, and what barriers or limitations they face. Then we can use simple language, visuals, demonstrations, and real-life examples to make the information relatable, easier to understand and easier to apply. The goal is not just to share information for the sake of giving oral hygiene instructions, but it’s to help patients feel confident enough to take action after being educated.
quip: What's one opportunity you think dental professionals have to make a greater impact on their patients' overall health and well-being?
Chantal: One of our greatest opportunities is to treat oral health as part of whole-body health. Dental professionals often see patients regularly, which gives us a chance to spot concerns early, encourage prevention, and start important conversations about nutrition, chronic disease, and overall wellness. When we take a holistic approach, we do more than care for teeth, we help improve lives. I always say, don’t just treat the teeth, treat the person.
quip: Community outreach has been a major part of your career. Why do you believe dental professionals should get involved in their local communities?
Chantal: Community outreach allows us to reach people who may not otherwise have access to oral health education or care. It builds trust, raises awareness, and helps prevent problems before they become bigger issues just by simply educating. It also gives us the opportunity to connect with people to show them that dental professionals are not as scary as they think we are.
Some of the most meaningful moments in my career have happened outside the dental office at schools, health fairs, and community events. Those experiences remind me that real impact begins when we show up, listen, and serve. At the core of who we are as dental professionals, we are advocates and that doesn’t just apply to those we treat in our operatories.
quip: What inspired you to become a Certified Autism Specialist?
Chantal: I became a Certified Autism Specialist because I wanted to better support individuals on the autism spectrum who often face unique challenges in the dental setting as well as to the parents and caregivers. Sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and anxiety can make dental visits especially difficult and overwhelming. I wanted to be better prepared to provide care that is compassionate, individualized, and truly supportive. Every patient deserves that. It takes a lot more effort, patience and a lot more running (lol), but it is so rewarding to see the minor and major progress from these patients.
quip: What inspired you to found The Smile Saver Foundation, and what need did you see in your community that you felt compelled to address?
Chantal: Growing up, I lived in a community where I could not ignore the needs around me. I saw families struggling, children without resources, and so many opportunities to make a difference. Even as a child, I knew I wanted to have a charity one day because I wanted to make a difference.
The Smile Saver Foundation was born from that vision. It allows me to bring together my passion and my purpose by supporting oral health education, community outreach, and practical resources for children and families. I wanted to create something that helps people feel empowered and supported.
quip: What is one opportunity or experience you've gained through the quip ambassador program that has been especially meaningful to you?
Chantal: One of the most meaningful parts of the quip ambassador program has been working with a company that truly values the expertise of oral disease prevention specialists. It means a lot to be heard by a brand that comes directly to the people on the front lines instead of overlooking us. That level of respect and collaboration has been incredibly rewarding. It has also connected me with other passionate professionals and reinforced my belief that oral health education can create real change far beyond the dental office.
